It Was The First Time…

As I looked into her eyes, I could tell that she was nervous.  I couldn’t say I blamed her.  After all, she was clearly in unfamiliar territory here.  We had known each other for many years already, but when the day finally arrived that we made that fateful commitment we knew that we would eventually have to confront this.  We had always imagined what it would be like, but now that the time had finally arrived, it all began to seem just a bit awkward.

As she sat there trying to work up her courage, I did my best to reassure her.  “Don’t worry,” I said.  “There are lots of people who do this all the time, and they do just fine.  Soon it will all come naturally to you.”

“I know that,” she replied with a bit of a quaver in her voice.  “It’s just, well…  I’ve never done this before.  How will I know I’m doing it right?”

“You’ll know if you’re doing it right.  It may not happen the first time, or even the second or third times, but believe me, if you’re doing it right you’ll know.”

“Well OK,” she replied, “I guess I’ll trust you, but believe me, this is not easy for me.”

“Just calm down, take some deep breaths, and relax.  Everything will turn out all right, I promise.”

“If you say so.  I’d just like to get this over with.”

With that, she looked down and set about the task at hand.  She worked slowly and tentatively at first, but as she began to figure out things how things worked and became more familiar with the rhythm of it all, she picked up her pace.  Before she knew it, she began to lose herself the task at hand, and the toes on her bare feet begin to curl up almost imperceptibly in anticipation of what was ahead.  From there, the rest was all a blur, and before she knew it, it was all finished.  When it was all said and done, she looked down slowly, almost in disbelief in what had just transpired here. She then began to quietly stammer:

“I…  I…  I…”
